NUMERACY-TERM 3 For Numeracy last week we focused on BODMAS. (Bracets Of Division Multiplication Subtraction) We worked on long/difficult sums that weren't marked with bracets to work out the sum properly. So we had to figure out which place the bracets belonged in the sums. I thought that it was a bit difficult for me because I don't really deal with bracets and I'm used to just normal sums with no bracets. But when I kept on practising the sums with bracets and placing bracets it got a bit easier and I got used to it. From that I learnt how to properly use bracets. Today we learnt about mapping in Numeracy. Basicaly on positive and negative degrees. Each and everyone of us had a copy of the map of the world, and we had to label the equator line and the degrees and also the Prime Mederian line and it's degree. We learnt about longitude and latitude. I felt a bit confused when I heard we were going to be learning about mapping in Maths because I'm not quite comfortable with mapping, but with help today I felt a little bit confident. Date: 17/8/10 For maths today we had to brain storm everything we know about Mapa and Mapping. We had to do it using differents kinds of graphic organisers that we are comfortable using. I used a mind map because thats something that I'm used to and that I can work well with. I don't really know much about mapping and maps but I atleast tried to write everything I could. This is an example of how I done mine: e.g~ ATLAS: Students, NSEW (North, South, East and West.), Equator, Prime Meridian, Longitude and Laitude, World, Continents, and Countries. I really enjoyed this task that I was given because I could compare what I know now about maps and mapping to what I knew before. Miss Mattiacci also paired us up with someone and with them we had to turn back to back with eachother then on partner has to tell the other the directions from their homw to school. The point of this task was to see if we can listen properly to direction with just hearing not looking or anything. I was partners with Vicky, I was the one that had to tell her my directions from my house to school. Vicky was a very good listener and got nearly every direction right but jus one wrong. After that we swapped and then she told me her directions from homw to school, and I got themm all right. After that as a whole class we had to say the word we heard/used to tell the directions. The words we used were: Left, Right, North, South, East, West, around, up, down, North East, South East, East West and North West. I enjoyed this task because I had to try and listen to the language that was used by my partner and see if I could follow it. Date: 19/8/10In maths today we worked on mapping again. We were all given a page from the melway and we had to write down the coordinates of the page we had. Miss Mattiacci explained to us how to search for a locatin in Melbourne and she also explained to us what a Melway is used for, which are for street directory. When Miss Mattiacci finished all that we all had to grab a partner and we were also given a piece of paper that had on what we had to do. Firstly we had to choose 4 specific locations on our own pages from the Melway, then we had to write them on the sheet of paper, after that we have to swap the page from the Melway and our sheets. Our partners had to try and find all of the 4 locations, after we have all done that we had to do the opposite, on the sheet we had to write 4 coordinate directions then we had to swap our maps and sheets with our partners. Our partners had to find the location by using the coordinates. Today I learnt a lot in Numeracy because I got a now a good knowledge on how to use Melways, I think that what we're learning in maths right now is very important because it's useful in our personal lives espicially in the future. Date: 23/8/10 Yesterday we learnt about Ratios. At the start of our lesson we had to see everything we knew about ratios. I aboselutelyknew nothing about ratios. So then Miss Mattiacci taught us what ratios are and how they relate to fractions. Ratio is like comparing to different sets. Yesterday we compared how many boys and girl are in our class, female and male classroom teachers, and football teams in Victoria and in other states. I now know a little about ratios but not a lot so hopefully I get to learn more afterwards. Date: 31/8/10Today in numeracy we starting learning about money. We were given llike a question to asses hoow much we know about money and the parts we need to improve on. After tht we were given 3 sheets of paper and then we had to fine amounts that equals a ceratin amount of money. For the extension we had to grab a pair and give eachother prices that they hard to work out as fast as they could.
